When it comes to the best destinations to enjoy during the winter, few stack up against New York City. One of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, New York City is one of those few places that comes even more alive during the holiday season. From snowy winter days, to holiday shopping, to winter activities, New York City is the epitome of a winter wonderland.
The world-famous art deco Rockefeller Center has become a landmark around the world because of its radiant décor and fun-filled winter activities. Most notably is the Rockefeller Christmas Tree, which is one of the largest Christmas trees in the world and the focal point of the Rockefeller Center. Starting in late November, the Rockefeller Center’s ice skating rink opens to the public and attracts a wide range of skaters from amateur to professionals. To avoid the busiest crowds, go ice skating early in the day during the week, instead of the weekend—it can be quite overwhelming when there’s large crowds.
It’s not unlikely to see snow early in the winter in New York City—even as early as October! The best snowy photograph opportunities can be found in one of New York’s most famous attractions, Central Park. With its charming stone bridges, landscaped walking paths, and gorgeous gardens, Central Park is a winter wonderland in and of itself.
When it comes to the winter and holidays, there’s something about freshly baked treats and warm drinks, and there is (arguably) no better place on earth for tasty desserts than New York City. You’ll have no problem finding tasty treats in restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, street vendors, and even Grand Central Station (where the BEST black and white cookies are sold) throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, and all the boroughs in New York. The East Village is one of the best areas of Manhattan for culinary delights, with quaint coffee shops—other than Starbucks—cupcake and chocolate shops, and bustling candy stores. A cupcake and hot chocolate is the perfect nightcap to a chilly evening in the City.
If you’ve never been to New York City, then you know you can’t make a visit without seeing at least one Broadway show. Winter brings some of the best shows to town, and not just musicals. Visitors can enjoy shows such as plays, Disney on Ice, and holiday musicals. One of this year’s Broadway headliners is Elf, which is an adaptation of the hit Christmas movie. And one of the ultimate Christmas classics is The Nutcracker—a must see!
What’s your favorite winter activity in New York City?

I miss living up that way so much this time of year. I love just walking around midtown during the holidays. Last time I was there at this time of year I found La Bonne Soupe – a homey little place near the MOMA – with awesome French onion soup and a decently priced bistrot menu – perfect place to warm up

Margo, I LOVE NYC during the holidays, as well! I’ll definitely have to check out La Bonne Soupe next time I’m visiting the MOMA–it sounds so cozy–thanks for the recommendation! Hopefully you’ll be able to visit NY before the holidays are over
