Located in southeastern France, Marseille is not only the oldest city in France, but also the second most populated city in the country.  Located along the beautiful seafront stretching 57 km, Marseille overlooks the Mediterranean Sea and is one of the ports of call for Regent Seven Seas lovely ship, the Mariner.

This cosmopolitan city, with a population of over a million people, has everything from the Old Quarter which inspired the painter Cézanne, to relaxing sidewalk cafes and shops.  The Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica sits atop La Garde Hill and offers amazing views of the port and the city below.

From thriving markets to one of the most picturesque harbors in the country, Marseille offers visitors plenty of options, amazing views and scenic backdrops.  Eating in France is always a wonderful experience, but two of Marseille’s signature dishes that a visitor should try are Bouillabaisse (fish stew) and Aioli which is a garlicky mayonnaise served with salt, cod and vegetables.

Two of Marseille’s popular boulevards are the pedestrian only Rue St-Fereol and the Corniche President JFKennedy.  Close to the Vieux Port, the Rue St-Fereol is dotted with plenty of cute boutiques and shops filled with local handmade items.  If you would prefer to just stroll along the water and enjoy the sea and the city views, then the short 15 minute walk to the Corniche President JFKennedy is for you.

What is your favorite Mediterranean port?
