Last week we discussed the rise in popularity in eco-accommodations, spotlighting some of the best resorts in the world. This included Gayana in Malaysia, Singita Pamushana in Zimbabwe, and Daintree Eco Lodge and Spa in Australia. If you have not yet viewed this post, please click here.

Today we conclude our series on the top luxury eco resorts and lodges in the world by featuring four other resorts.

Frégate Island Private, Seychelles. Have you ever wanted to have a private island to yourself? That’s basically what you get at Frégate Island Private. The royal couple’s recent honeymoon to Seychelles put this chain of islands on the map, making it the must-see destination of the year for beach enthusiasts. With just 16 private villas, guests to Frégate nearly have the island to themselves. Since it’s so small and secluded, the resort has gone to great lengths to conserve it. Frégate’s most unique conservation effort is their tortoise conservation program. Guests can adopt a tortoise, which ensures its safeguarding until it’s ready to fend for itself.

It wasn’t long ago that eco-tourism didn’t even exist. However, to better preserve travel experiences and the places we go, this has quickly become a popular way to travel, often in the form of eco-accommodations. Most of the world’s best destinations now feature a wide-range of eco-friendly accommodations, each doing their own part to preserve the environment, wildlife, and local communities. Today is part one of a two-part series on the world’s best luxury eco-resorts and lodges.

Gayana Eco-Resort, Malaysia. Malaysia is one of the most overlooked destinations in the world and one that needs to be at the top of your list. A quick look at photos from Gayana and it’ll quickly move up your list. This isn’t your typical high-rise luxury resort, but instead features chic over-the-water bungalows. You can literally jump into the clear blue waters from your room. The focus of Gayana is protecting the area’s marine ecology. Few hotels invest in marine ecology like Gayana does, as the property has its own research center. Guests are able to participate in protecting and restoring the area’s marine life through such activities as protecting the endangered Giant Clams and preserving the coral reef.

Ecotourism is much more than just a leisure trip, but one that seeks to educate travelers, while also giving them an opportunity to contribute to the environmental and economic impact of an area. While many ecotrips are environmental, there is a growing trend of trips that help a destination’s socio-political atmosphere.
