back painTraveling can be a major pain in the neck. Literally. This is why it’s important to understand your body and how you can alleviate and avoid pain during travel.

Below are some tips to help you stand up straight and feel great while traveling:

Get Up Regularly: Whether you’re sitting on a train, or in an airplane or car, it’s important to stand up and move around. Sitting in the same position for a long period of time can cause terrible back pain (everywhere from the lower back to the upper back). Even if you might not feel like getting up and stretching, it’s important to be proactive and do so. This will prevent joints and muscles from stiffening.

Pack Efficiently: Most of us are guilty of packing way too much into our bags. This can cause serious physical pain and agony, especially when you have to bend down and launch your suitcase onto the checked baggage scale or in the overhead compartment. The best way to ensure your suitcase doesn’t way a ton is by planning out your outfits and necessary toiletries in advance. Instead of bringing two large shampoo and conditioner containers, bring two small containers with your shampoo and conditioner inside. Or opt for the shampoo and conditioner in one. On a visit to Ireland, you can expect to spend a lot of time outdoors. Ireland is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, from its rolling hills to green plains to rugged cliffs. The Emerald Isle is an inviting destination for the traveler who is ready to get off the beaten path and explore the beauty of this European country. However, with its unique terrain and unpredictable weather, it’s not always easy to pack for an outdoor weekend in Ireland. We’ve highlighted some important tips to keep in mind for a weekend of walking, hiking, and riding in Ireland.

Bring appropriate attire. Leave those flip-flops at home, as you aren’t going to need them in Ireland, even if you’re visiting during the summer. Even for a light weekend hike, make sure to bring a firm pair of hiking shoes or boots. Some of Ireland’s terrain can be rugged, and a good pair of shoes will become your best friend. Make sure to bring warm clothes, such as a sweatshirt, jacket, and warm socks, as the weather can be unpredictable, often much cooler than  forecasted. Read More | Comments

    travel tips

I never travel without creating a checklist of must-have items for my travels. To make it easy for myself, I have several checklists printed off with the same items on each—these are the items I always travel with. I then have space at the bottom of these printed documents to add any extra items I’ll need while visiting a particular destination.

    Journey conversations…..

When faced with a long journey in the air there are a few things you can do to make the flight more enjoyable.  The first recommendation is to make sure you are dressed for comfort.  Note to self, comfort does not have to translate to sloppy.   Comfort also includes your shoes so make sure they aren’t tight and have room for your feet to swell some.

The day of travel make sure you are completely hydrated before you ever board the aircraft. To hydrate drink plenty of water or a Gatorade type drink, but avoid alcohol as it can act as a mild diuretic.   You may want to purchase a bottle of water once you have cleared security so that you always have water available during the flight.  Just refill your bottle with water that is served on board.

Make sure to pack in your carry-on essentials (things you absolutely cannot live without) but also a few items that will make the long journey easier. My favorites are ear plugs which help to keep out the constant engine noise and reduce the volume of conversation around you.  Lip moisturizer and hand cream to keep your lips and hands comfortable.  Eye drops if you tend to get dry eyes and I love a pashmina as it is so much softer and nicer to wrap in than an airline blanket.

    Music - Books - Movies

Fill your iPod with your favorite songs, your iTouch with your favorite movies and your iPad with your favorite books (or any combination.)  Having a comfortable set of earphones always creates a great environment to listen to the music, movies, or books on tape.

I’m not one to wear an eye mask, so I just pop on my sunglasses to help cut down on the light when I’m trying to nap and I get up, stretch and take a short walk every 2 hours.  A throw away toothbrush and small tube of toothpaste along with a packet of moist face wipes helps you to quickly freshen up prior to deplaning (remember to use your bottled water vs. the lav water for brushing.)

    Snacks

Also carry a roll of lifesavers or hard candy to combat a cough or dry mouth, something salty like pretzels, and something chocolate – M & M’s, because, well, I love chocolate.  And one of the best ways to make sure you are well prepared is to contact a travel expert to coordinate your journey.

What are your favorite must haves when your journey has a long flight involved?
