Perhaps it’s the preservation, height, or shapes of a building that bring such wonder. St. Petersburg is one of the top architectural destinations, featuring several of the most iconic buildings in the world. Once a small, unpopulated swamp region, it has grown over the centuries to become a major hub and a premier destination for travelers with a special affinity toward architecture.

    St. Isaac’s Cathedral. It should come as no surprise that a cathedral is one of the most fascinating buildings in St. Petersburg, since this part of the world is renowned for its religious architecture that often dates back centuries. At the time of its completion in the 1800s, it was one of the tallest cathedrals. Facing uncertainty during World War II, St. Issac’s notable dome was painted gray in order to not draw attention from enemy aircraft.
